Nine reproductions of drawings by Gautier from the Gautier Collection assembled by an anonymous 19th Century archivist. The drawings are arranged here in order of publication.
Gautier had begun his training as a painter, until he was kicked out for aggressively promoting romanticist theory and practice. He retained a close relationship with the visual arts community personally and as an influential critic. To the end of his life, he sometimes included drawings in his letters, especially on his travels. Avant-garde poetry only payed marginally better at the time than it does now, and much of Gautier's income came from his travel writing, which was published first as articles in magazines and then collected into books. His drawings were sometimes copied into prints (necessary for reproduction at the time) to accompany the articles. These and many other drawings were published after Gautier's death, some collected by our archivist.

Two untitled images mounted together: three men & covered corridor. from Voyage Pittoresque en Algérie (1853?). Engraved by Bauland & Brevier.
It is unclear whether this and the next three prints are from the first (serial) printing in
1853, but given it seems reasonably likely since the previous archivist
is typically meticulous about dating reprints. They are engravings made
from the sketchbooks he kept on his travels.
